GrassGuards

A grassland monitoring platform for Tamil Nadu that turns satellite and field data into decisions — for farmers, FPOs, pastoral communities, and carbon project developers.

The problem

Grasslands are hard to see, and easy to lose.

Grasslands feed livestock, store carbon, and support entire pastoral communities — yet they are rarely measured. Without data, it is hard to prove a carbon claim, spot encroachment early, or make the case for protecting the land at all.

GrassGuards makes the land measurable. It pulls satellite imagery, atmospheric data, and field records into one platform, so the people who depend on grasslands can act on evidence instead of guesswork.

What it does

One platform, from satellite pixel to carbon credit.

Satellite grassland monitoring

Land cover and condition tracked through Google Earth Engine imagery.

Air quality monitoring

Atmospheric readings from the Sentinel-5P TROPOMI mission.

Carbon MRV

Measurement, reporting & verification aligned with the Verra VM0042 methodology.

Carbon marketplace

A path from verified data to tradable carbon outcomes.

Species prediction

Modelling of likely grassland species from environmental signals.

Encroachment & fire alerts

Mining-encroachment detection and fire monitoring via NASA FIRMS.

How it works

From raw signal to a decision you can act on.

GrassGuards is a pipeline, not a single feature — each stage narrows a flood of satellite and sensor data down to something a farmer, an NGO, or a carbon developer can actually use.

Stage 1
Collect
Satellite imagery, air-quality readings, and fire data are pulled in continuously from Earth Engine, TROPOMI, and NASA FIRMS.
Stage 2
Model
Land cover, species likelihood, and encroachment signals are derived from the raw data.
Stage 3
Verify
Carbon outcomes are measured and reported against the Verra VM0042 methodology.
Stage 4
Act
Verified results feed alerts, reports, and the carbon marketplace.
Who it's for

Built for the people who live off the land.

Farmers & FPOs

See the condition of grazing and grassland, and back land claims with data.

Pastoral communities

Evidence to protect commons and traditional grazing grounds.

NGOs

Monitoring and reporting for conservation and restoration programmes.

Carbon project developers

MRV and a marketplace path aligned with recognised methodologies.

Common questions

About the platform.

What data sources does GrassGuards use?

Google Earth Engine satellite imagery, Sentinel-5P TROPOMI air-quality data, and NASA FIRMS fire data, combined with field records.

Which carbon methodology does it align with?

GrassGuards' carbon MRV is aligned with the Verra VM0042 methodology.

Who can use GrassGuards?

Farmers and FPOs, pastoral communities, NGOs, and carbon project developers working in and around Tamil Nadu's grasslands.

Is it live right now?

Yes — GrassGuards is live in production at app.grassguards.org.

Want GrassGuards for your region or use case?

We can talk through adapting GrassGuards' monitoring and MRV pipeline for a different geography or a new data source.
